WILD! - The Misadventures of a Wildlife Gardener

Wild! recounts the highs, lows and numerous mysteries of a year in a Norfolk wildlife garden, plus some excursions into gardens past.

Encompassing everything from fungi to frogs and titmice to trees, this book illustrates how wildlife responds to sympathetic gardening, thereby making an invaluable contribution to our environment.

A lifetime observer of the natural world, the author takes the reader on a wonderfully relaxing journey through Nature’s seasons with insight and self-deprecatory humour, while admitting a rare capacity for misadventure.

Charmingly illustrated, this book will be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in the extraordinary diversity of our garden wildlife.

“Wild! Is a truly lovely, charming and, above all, informative read.” - MA - Aylesbury

Wild! Is a truly lovely, charming and, above all, informative read. Written in an accessible, gentle style, it is much more than just a garden and wildlife guide; there is a real sense of respect and empathy towards our natural world and the creatures we are lucky to share with it.

“With her thick hair freed from pins and clips now flowing sensuously over his face, he felt as if he were falling into some swirling, benign vortex against which he was utterly powerless.”

Dancing with the Devil is a collection of five short stories linked by the theme of desire, its manifestations and outcomes. Ranging in time from the late 1930s to the present day, the locations vary between England, France and the Russo-Polish border.

In these diverse settings the stories explore the nature of personal relationships and how they are tested and exploited. And, as events unfold, the characters are not always what they seem. Propelled by the infinite complexity of human emotions, they are drawn inexorably into a web of desire, obsession, duplicity and revenge.

“This is a really enjoyable book”

“This book is a collection of five short stories, each very different but with a central theme of desire and how it manifests itself in different ways. Each story is set in a different location and range in time from pre-second World War to the present day. Although I enjoyed all of the stories, there were a couple that stood out to me and I would have liked these to continue, so that I could find out more about the characters and what they did next. This is a really enjoyable book and is nice and easy to dip in and out of, by reading a story at a time. I really recommend this book.”

“The stories were well written”

“I liked the length of the short stories, which featured new characters every time on a loosely linked theme. My favourite was Dancing with the Devil - the setting of the smallholding and the village evoked a bygone age. The reluctant friendship between two of the main characters and where it led to was interesting. I also liked the way the author rounded the story with showing what happened later to give a sense of closure to me for the story. I enjoyed this collection - the stories were well written with full characters and believable stories.”
